Prof. Dr. Marleen Peumans

Marleen Peumans was born on November 10, 1964, in Belgium. She obtained her degree in Dentistry in 1987 at the Catholic University of Leuven. Thereafter, she followed a 4-year post-graduate program at the Department of Operative Dentistry. She applied herself especially to the clinical use and the performance of anterior and posterior resin composites, bonded ceramic restorations, fibre-reinforced composite restorations and bleaching. She took part in numerous clinical studies concerning dentine adhesives, posterior composites, and ceramic veneers/inlays/onlays. In 1997 she obtained the degree of Doctor in Medical Sciences. From 2004 she became Professor at the Catholic University of Leuven. She has several national and international publications on her name concerning clinical performance of adhesive restorations and bleaching. She is a member of the Bio-Emulation team.



During the last decade, adhesive dentistry has become more and more important in the domain of restorative dentistry. Adhesive procedures offer the possibility to keep the restorations smaller and decrease in this way the so-called ‘money tooth’ effect. Nevertheless, adhesive restorative procedures are quite technique sensitive. Therefore, it is required to follow simplified and standardized protocols to make high quality adhesive restorations in daily practice. The two most commonly placed adhesive restorations in the posterior region are direct composite restorations and indirect bonded onlays/partial crowns. A detailed biomechanical analysis before and during cavity preparation will determine what will be the most favorable adhesive restoration (direct or indirect). Direct composite restorations show a good clinical performance in the medium to long term, when restoring Class I and II lesions. The quality of a direct posterior composite restoration is mainly determined by the cavity preparation, the adhesive protocol, the surface finish, marginal adaptation, the proximal contactpoint and emergence profile when placing a class II restoration. During placement of the composite restoration the dentist can emulate nature in a simple and predictable way following a layering approach based on a histo-anatomic, optical and anatomical analysis of the natural teeth. In this lecture, an effective and simplfied protcol will be presented to make high quality direct posterior composite restorations on a daily basis.
